Skipsteknisk to design new Regina C

Norwegian naval architect Skipsteknisk AS has secured the design contract for a new arctic factory freezer trawler for owners in Greenland, with the new trawler to be built at the Metalships & Docks yard in Spain.

Owner Niisa Trawl Aps, located in Nuuk, Greenland, is preparing to build a new arctic factory freezer trawler to a Skipsteknisk design. The new vessel is of ST-118 design, a tailored design for operation in heavy ice at the coast of Greenland.

The new vessel will be Regina C and is the third Skipsteknisk-designed vessel to carry this name. The vessel will have an 80 metre length and a beam of 17 metres, and is to be built to a DNV GL class with the highest Baltic ice-class rating.

The new Regina C is designed to have accommodation for 32 persons, all arranged in modern, well appointed single and double cabins. During the development of the vessel design, great effort was made to achieve the highest possible safety standards for the crew, during all kinds of operations and weather conditions.

Regina C will be outfitted primarily for the northern coldwater shrimp fishery, but options for other fisheries have been incorporated into its design.

The vessel is designed with high focus on reduction of any pollutive discharges to water or air and the recovery and recycling of excess energy wherever possible.

According to fishing vessels sales manager Inge Bertil Straume, for Skipsteknisk this is a very important contract secured in a period where the design companies are suffering due to low activity in the offshore segment.

‘Design of fishing vessels has, however, always been given high priority at Skipsteknisk and it’s the segment today that, together with research vessels, secures the company full capacity utilisation,’ he said, adding that the engineering work for the Regina C has already started and will continue throughout 2017, with the new trawler due for delivery in August 2018.

‘A contract for the vessel’s construction has been signed with the Spanish shipyard Metalships & Docks SA, a shipyard with extensive experience in building specialised vessels for both fishing and offshore sectors,’ he said.

‘At Skipsteknisk we are very pleased by the trust shown by Niisa Trawl through assigning also this contract to the company. Through this new contract we look forward to the continuation of a highly valued relationship that has lasted for decades.’
