Samherji buys Collins Seafood
Icelandic fishing and processing company Samherji has expanded in the UK with the acquisition of seafood sales and distribution company Collins Seafood.
Samherji took over Collins Seafood, based at Newton Aycliffe near Durham and with a distribution depot in Leeds, on 1st July. The company distributes seafrozen fillets across northern and central England to a large client base of primarily fish and chip shops.
According to Samherji, Collins Seafood was established 35 years ago by Richard Collins, who is remaining in post as the company’s managing director. Last year Collins Seafood handled 10,000 tonnes of frozen seafood from Iceland, the Faroes, Norway, Russia and other sources, and had a turnover of around £60 million. It has a staff of 30 in distribution and office roles.
‘Collins Seafood has been one of Samherji’s customers for many years,’ a Samherji spokesman said.
‘Samheri’s sales arm in the UK, Seagold, has managed our sales in the UK market for 21 years and will work closely with Collins Seafood in future.’
The acquisition is seen as Samherji consolidating its position on the UK market for cod and haddock.
